It all started with a kiln.
When I decided it was time for me to get back to my art, I knew I wanted to work with clay. I didn't have a kiln at the time and I really couldn't afford a new one. I started looking for a used one in my area and came up empty for a couple of weeks. Finally, I found one for sale close by and in my price range. The only problem was that it was very small. I decided that a small kiln was better than no kiln at all, and I bought it. So there I was, with a very small kiln, wondering what I could create that I could fire in such a small kiln. At the time, I had been playing with beads. I was making jewelry just for fun at that point. However, when I realized that I could create ceramic pieces to use in my jewelry and that my kiln was the perfect size for such a venture; everything just fell into place. Colleen Harmon Design was born.
I went to college at Penn State and studied Integrative Arts. After college, I got married, started a family, and pushed aside my art for a time. Then, when my youngest started school full time, I decided it was time to embrace my inner artist once again.
